退休舞男Simon现从事古董买卖经纪，生性风流倜傥，他的表弟Mike是一个新入行的舞男，因事惹上官司，Simon为救表弟，因而与性格保守的女助理检控官Sandy相识，最后Simon于庭上斗赢了Sandy，令Sandy对他又爱又恨。富家太太留太太嫁了世家子Peter，没有女儿，令家族甚为不满，Peter遂与妻子合谋用金钱雇请舞男借种，唯留太太只看中退休舞男Simon。Sandy有阴险上司林冲，时常压迫她，并且联合杀鸭警司扫荡舞男，Sandy这时对Simon有爱慕之意，欲通知Simon，结果反被上司知悉，遭受革退，Simon知悉Sandy消沉，极盼与Sandy和好发展一段真正友情，留太太本来利用Simon借种，结果爱上Simon，苦缠Simon，Simon欲向留太太摊牌，Peter出现，纠缠间Simon错手杀了Peter，留太太大力指证simon谋杀丈夫。Sandy为救情郎充任Simon辩护律师运用智谋，引得留太太暴露弱点，成为污点证人，Simon无罪释放。
1942年，抗日战争与第二次世界大战正处于白热化阶段。燎原之火，生灵涂炭，天灾人祸，哀鸿遍野。当军事家和政治家的目光聚焦在一城一郭的征伐劫掠之时，几乎鲜少有人注意到古老的中原河南正爆发一场惨绝人寰的大旱灾。影片的主角老东家（张国立 饰），狡猾、市侩，典型的封建地主，可即便如此也无法对抗这史无前例的灾难，他被迫逃荒，亲眼见证着儿子、儿媳、老伴等亲人的种种死状。他的遭遇是三百万灾民的缩影，面对这群人的苦难，无论是高高在上的蒋委员长（陈道明 饰），还是深入民间报道灾难真相的美国记者白修德（阿德里安•布劳迪 Adrien Brody 饰），以及海内外的每一个人，如何能从这眼前的人间炼狱之景侧目。绝望无止的逃生坎途，中华民族多舛命运的苦难一斑……本片根据刘震云的小说《温故一九四二》改编。
Based on the novel by Karel Capek, the prominent Czech writer of the early 20th century who coined the word robot for his play R.U.R., the story revolves around a discovery of Krakatit - a powerful explosive - by Prokop, an experimental scientist who, following an accidental explosion in his lab, slips in and out of delirium. When he realises that, in a delirious period, he has given the formula for making Krakatit to one of his colleagues, he tries to find the man, who does not realize how dangerous a thing Krakatit is. In the process, he nearly gives his discovery away again to foreign interests, a group of anarchists, and even greater forces of darkness...
